Instagram Reels Audio Explained: Original Audio, Music and Licensing
Every reel has a sound attached to it. Understanding what kind of sound it is helps you know where it came from, who owns it and what you can do with it.
Types of reel audio
- Original audio: recorded by the creator in the reel. It may include speech, ambient sound and music playing in the background.
- Licensed music: songs from Instagram's music library, available inside the app.
- Reused sounds: another creator's original audio that you use in your own reel.
Who owns it?
The person who recorded original audio owns that recording. Music belongs to the artists, writers and labels who made it. Instagram licenses some music for use on the platform. That licence does not necessarily extend to copying the sound elsewhere.
What you can do inside Instagram
- Tap the audio name to see the sound and every reel that uses it.
- Save audio to your list.
- Use Use audio to create a reel with that sound.
Why audio sometimes disappears
Sounds can be removed for licensing, copyright claims or because the original creator deleted it. When that happens, reels using it may lose their sound.
Saving audio outside Instagram
If you need the sound as a file, for example from your own public reel, AudioFromReels extracts it as MP3 or M4A. Treat anything you did not create as protected, and get permission before reusing it.
